Final Project: Recollection of Objects

Reaction Paper: The problem for this project was to create a toy or game by reusing found, collected or recyclable objects. I approached the problem by taking an old pair of pajamas and using that and some feathers from my mother to create a teddy bear. i did not quite like this project for the reason that, for one, the sewing of his face was difficult for me because I am not used to sewing details. Also, I did not like the fact that I did not have the cotton that I wanted to use to stuff the bear. The feathers were a bit too pointy for a child to have. Though it did not turn out the way I like and I had some negatives in finishing, I am happy with what I was able to do with the project.

Polyhedrals: Phase A and B

Phase A

Phase B

Reaction Paper: The problem for phase A of the polyhedrals project was to create a 3 dimensional mask using polyhedral forms and the design should include at least 3 polyhedral shapes. I approached this problem by first making the base of my mask a large polyhedral. I then decorated it with 3D stars and created a polyhedral shape for the nose. The problem for phase B was to apply polyhedral structures using additive methods to create a 3D sculpture. I approached this problem by taking a basic polyhedral, a cube, and layering it until I received some sort of form. I cut out some small images to give the structure some positive and negative space. I ran into a few problems during this polyhedral project section. For one, I had a hard time finding a well enough shape for phase A to use for my mask face. Also, I didn't have the materials at the time to add more bold colors. In phase B, I initially wanted to create a wave but with the way I was layering it, the cubes would not say. I didn't particularly like this project due to the difficulty I had in using the polyhedrals.

Serial Planes: Phase 1 and 2

Phase 1: Book Reconstruction

 Phase 2: Serial Planes

Reaction Paper:

The purpose of the serial planes project was to take the layering, stacking, curling, and other methods to take flat and solid forms and form them into something with shape and volume. I found in our video and book research that the concepts of serial planes were and are used in buildings, structures, parks and other forms. Maya Lin's park redesign gave me the inspiration for my puzzle/board project. i used a basic form to create a structure that if expanded, could be used as a play space for children, much like her ice rink. My book project came from just the thought of an open book. An opening book is like the growth of knowledge and that reminded me of an open flower. With the serial planes project, I received a broader image and experience on materials. The book reconstruction phase showed me that you can do so much with that sort of material. An old book that is looked over, has the texture and possibility to b a beautiful piece of artwork. I found the foam board to b a bit more challenging. Due to its many layers of different textures, it was difficult to make well enough rounded edges, and sanding didn't help well after the fact. The book's thin pages were frail but easy to adjust to. As a whole, I believe I understand and respect the art of serial planes. Though it seemed difficult at the beginning after looking at the works of great artists such as Maya Lin, it turned out to be a challenging, yet mind boggling and interesting project that I enjoyed working on.

Anything but a Box Project

Reaction paper

The problem of this project was to change a box into anything not resembling its original shape. All pieces were to be used and the box must "disappear". I approached the idea by reconstructing the box all together. The green color of the box gave me the idea of forests and farming so I decided to create a forest seen with a hut. I believe i solved the problem by creating something completely new. I wanted to create a living seen from something so bland and empty. I could have improved the project by laying down the sides of the diagram to make the forest view look more open. This would have made the project seem more "forest like".
